Rochford Wines
Vineyards
At Rochford Wines we pride ourself on the production of premium quality wines that express the true character of our vineyard sites. Our winemaker produces high quality wines with fruit sourced from our vineyards in the Macedon Ranges and the Yarra Valley, both located in two of Victoria’s premium cool climate wine regions.
Together, our winemaker and viticulturalist work to ensure that each of these vineyards produce only the finest of grapes that will go into making our wines.
Macedon Ranges Vineyard
Our first vineyard is nestled on the northern slopes of Victoria’s Macedon Ranges, just 75 km north of Melbourne. In fact, our name comes from the hamlet of Rochford, found near the Lancefield – Woodend Road in Macedon.
From this vineyard, situated just north of Mount Macedon at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level, there is the most stunning view of the surrounding Macedon Ranges. The visual surrounds provide a distinctive Australian backdrop to wines produced with an international perspective.
At this 270-acre vineyard, we were one of the first wineries in Australia to plant the coveted Burgundy Clone, 777 Pinot Noir. We are very excited about this and look forward to the added dimensions this clone will bring to our already highly acclaimed Pinot Noir.
Another Burgundy Clone we have planted at this vineyard is the Chardonnay 76. With this, our viticulturist is able to provide our winemaker with a broader selection of Chardonnay grapes to blend together, resulting in a more complex wine. This is achieved when several clones are blended together, producing a most enjoyable wine.
The plantings at the Macedon Ranges winery also include the Chardonnay clone Mendoza, made famous in the Margaret River wine region, and the Pinot Noir clones 114 and 115.
We grow the following grapes at our Macedon Ranges vineyard:
- Pinot Noir
- Chardonnay
- Pinot Gris
- Riesling
Yarra Valley Vineyard
Our vineyard off Maroondah Highway in the Yarra Valley draws fruit from over 35 Hectares. Similar to the area of the Macedon Ranges, the Yarra Valley is also one of Victoria's premium cool climate wine regions.
To achieve the desired balance between crop levels and leaf canopy area, excess shots and bunches are removed by hand. This results in a more open canopy with good sunlight exposure for the grape and lower cropping levels. We consider it very important to maintain low yields so that we can achieve full and uniform ripeness, regardless of seasonal conditions.
We grow the following grapes at our Yarra Valley vineyard:
- Cabernet Franc
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Chardonnay
- Gewürztraminer
- Merlot
- Pinot Noir
- Riesling
- Sauvignon Blanc
- Shiraz
