Tasting Notes: Deep, brooding purple/red colour. Dark Kalamata olives in spiced oil aromas and plum pudding dusted with cinnamon drift onto the nose. A rich and full bodied middle palate with cloves and ripe plummy fruit. A complex weave of fine but firm wicker tannins supports the fruit into a long, fine, dry masonry dust finish with a slight mineral aftertaste.
Winemaking Notes: Harvest: Hand-picked on the 8th of March
Vinification & Elevage: Fermented as 100% whole bunches. The wine is pressed after 3 weeks on skins to 3 French oak puncheons for indigenous malolactic conversion, then sulphured on lees. 10 months in oak, then racked twice prior to bottling.
Viticultural Notes: Syrah clone: PT23 on own roots
The fruit for this wine is grown on our original Hill Road vineyard in Coldstream.
Optimal conditions for both flowering and fruitset in the vineyards gave well balanced yields with plenty of promise leading into the 2019 harvest. A dry January and February followed, culminating in a relatively compressed vintage, though attention to detail in the vineyards gave winemakers wonderfully balanced fruit with concentration of flavour and exceptional natural acidity.
