Tasting Notes: Dried rose petal, 5 spice, a little dried oregano with red currant and raspberries. There is also an underlying savoury aspect with warm earth and struck rock. It is a fine boned and classic “Upper Yarra Pinot”, in that genuine “cool climate” vibe. On the palate it is lively and dances across the tongue. Flavours oscillate between red berry compote, sautéed mushroom with a hint of ginger nut biscuits. The wine is refreshing but soft, plush and easy to sink into.
Winemaking Notes:
Harvest: Hand-picked on the 3rd of March
Vinification & Elevage: Fruit is fully de-stemmed and fermented as 100% whole berries. 4-day cold soak plunged once per day then pressed after 12 days to French oak (20% new) for indigenous malolactic conver sion then sulphured on lees. 10 months in oak, then racked twice prior to bottling.
Viticultural Notes: Pinot Noir clones: 114, 115, D5V12 and MV6
The grapes for this wine are from a vineyard in Gembrook and is the southernmost vineyard in the Yarra Valley. Whilst known for its volcanic derived red soils, this vineyard sits on a Granite outcrop. These quartz rich soils are perfect for growing Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Optimal conditions for both flowering and fruitset in the vineyards gave well balanced yields with plenty of promise leading into the 2019 harvest. A dry January and February followed, culminating in a relatively compressed vintage, though attention to detail in the vineyards gave winemakers wonderfully balanced fruit with concentration of flavour and exceptional natural acidity.
